Hand-dyed cotton fabrics and rust-dyed cotton/silk blend fabric.
This quilt is part of the “Art and Science” exhibit sponsored by the Professional Art Quilters Alliance. The science area is Environmental Science–an interdisciplinary field which includes chemistry, biology, physics, and geology, among others.
This quilt is in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster in 2010. The chemical fact that oil and water don’t mix makes cleaning up an oil spill especially difficult. It also causes a profound impact on animals caught in the path of the oil (such as the Brown Pelican on this quilt).
